The hosting guide

How to host a mahjong night

Three easy party formulas that make your table the one everyone wants an invite to.

01

Girls' night in

Rosé, snacks, and serious competition

Set the scene

Low, warm lighting and a clean table. Fold your mat so the pattern faces up, fan the tiles face-down for the wash, and keep racks within arm's reach. Fresh flowers in the center of the table are a nice touch.

Food & drinks

A chilled rosé or sparkling water with lemon. Cheese board, chocolate, and a bowl of something crunchy. Nothing greasy — greasy fingers and tiles don't mix.

Playlist

Smooth jazz or a low-key lounge playlist. Keep it low enough to hear the calls.

02

Family game night

Three generations, one table

Set the scene

Pull up a mix of chairs — high and low. Let the youngest shuffle; they love it. Keep the rule card face-up in the center so no one has to ask.

Food & drinks

Lemonade, iced tea, and a tray of cookies. Individual snack bowls so nobody reaches across the table.

Playlist

Something everyone knows — classic 70s and 80s. It becomes its own conversation.

03

Holiday open house

Festive, come and go

Set the scene

Set the mat as the centerpiece with a small evergreen or candle beside it. Keep a second mat rolled nearby for a side table when the crowd grows.

Food & drinks

Hot cider or mulled wine. A make-your-own-cookie station. Napkins within reach of every seat.

Playlist

A holiday mix, low and warm. Save the dancing for after the last hand.
